Why Is Russia Threatening More Massive Strikes On Ukraine

The Institute for the Study of War said the scale and frequency of Ukraine’s deep strikes suggest growing pressure on Russian air defenses

Russia has threatened to intensify military operations against Ukraine after Kyiv launched what was described as its largest drone attack on Moscow since the war began.

According to Russian authorities, nearly 200 drones targeted the Russian capital on Wednesday night and Thursday. The attack reportedly injured 16 people, disrupted operations at four Moscow airports and triggered a major fire at Gazprom’s Moscow Refinery, a strategic energy facility that has been targeted several times in recent weeks.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow would continue carrying out regular “massive group strikes” against targets linked to Ukraine’s military capabilities. His remarks were reported by Interfax.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the operation was a response to Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. He argued that targeting facilities supporting Russia’s war effort was justified and called for diplomatic steps to end the conflict.

The Institute for the Study of War said the scale and frequency of Ukraine’s deep strikes suggest growing pressure on Russian air defenses. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has urged both sides to pursue a negotiated settlement and pledged continued support for Ukraine.
