A new diplomatic dispute has emerged between the United States and Italy after President Donald Trump made controversial remarks about Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

According to CNN, Trump told an Italian media outlet that Meloni had “begged” him for a photograph during the recent G7 summit in France. The report said Trump claimed he agreed because he felt sorry for her.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani responded by canceling a planned visit to the United States, where he was scheduled to meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Tajani described Trump’s remarks as offensive.

Meloni strongly rejected the claims, calling them “completely fabricated” in a video statement. She said she was shocked by the comments and argued that Italy does not beg for favors from allies.

The dispute marks another setback in relations between Trump and Meloni, whose relationship has faced tensions in recent months despite efforts to improve broader U.S.-European ties at the G7 summit, according to the report.
