At least 17 people were killed and more than 100 injured after Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone assault on Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials and CNN. The attack struck Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia and Poltava, damaging homes, medical facilities and other civilian infrastructure.

Authorities said six people died in Kyiv and 11 in Dnipro, including two children. Rescue crews continued searching for residents feared trapped beneath the rubble of a partially collapsed apartment building in the capital. The Ukrainian Health Ministry reported that five medical facilities were damaged or destroyed.

According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia launched 656 drones and 73 missiles, including advanced hypersonic Zircon missiles. While many projectiles were intercepted, officials said none of the Zircon missiles were shot down.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attack highlighted the need for additional U.S.-supplied Patriot missile systems. Russia’s Defense Ministry said the strikes targeted military, fuel and transport infrastructure in response to what it described as Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory.
