New York Attorney General Letitia James has filed a lawsuit against 3M, DuPont, Chemours, and Corteva, accusing the companies of creating a public nuisance by manufacturing and selling products containing PFAS, commonly known as "forever chemicals."

According to the report, the lawsuit was filed in an Albany state court and seeks to require the companies to pay for environmental cleanup efforts and provide stronger consumer warnings about potential health risks.

The report said PFAS chemicals persist in the environment and the human body for long periods, contaminating air, water, and soil.

The state alleges the manufacturers concealed the dangers associated with the chemicals for decades.

According to the report, the companies had not responded publicly to the lawsuit at the time of filing.

The case follows a separate settlement reached last year in which DuPont, Chemours, and Corteva agreed to resolve environmental claims with New Jersey for up to $2 billion.

PFAS exposure has been associated with cancer and developmental disorders.
