Rubio Leads Rare Israel-Lebanon Diplomatic Meeting

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio

The U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to host Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors in Washington for direct talks, marking a rare diplomatic step amid ongoing conflict, as reported by officials.

The meeting aims to explore a potential ceasefire, long-term disarmament of Hezbollah and a broader peace framework between Israel and Lebanon. It will be the highest-level direct engagement between the two sides since 1993.

The talks come after pressure from President Donald Trump on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reduce hostilities. According to officials, Netanyahu agreed to participate but has only partially scaled back strikes, continuing military operations in southern Lebanon.

The Lebanese government and the Trump administration have pushed for a pause in Israeli attacks ahead of negotiations.

A State Department official said the dialogue is focused on securing Israel’s northern border while supporting Lebanon’s sovereignty, adding that Israel’s conflict is with Hezbollah, not the Lebanese state.
