A bipartisan group of U.S. senators says it has reached an agreement with the Trump administration to advance legislation targeting countries that continue purchasing Russian energy.

According to the report, Senators Lindsey Graham, Roger Wicker, Richard Blumenthal, and Jeanne Shaheen announced the updated proposal after securing White House support.

The report said the legislation is intended to increase pressure on Russia by imposing penalties on nations that continue buying Russian oil and natural gas.

Earlier versions of the bill included tariffs of up to 500 percent on imports from countries that maintain energy trade with Moscow, a measure that could affect major buyers such as China and India.

According to the report, renewed backing from the Trump administration removes a key hurdle that had slowed the bill's progress in Congress.

The report added that President Donald Trump has recently expressed growing frustration over Russia's failure to reach a peace agreement after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Ankara, urging Moscow to end the conflict through negotiations.
