President Donald Trump has appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to serve concurrently as National Security Advisor, following the departure of Mike Waltz from the role. The announcement, made on Trump’s Truth Social account, comes just hours after reports confirmed Waltz’s exit, which followed months of scrutiny over his involvement in a leaked Signal chat that disclosed sensitive military planning.
This marks the fourth major role President Trump has assigned to Rubio, who has also served as acting USAID administrator and acting national archivist.

Trump framed the reshuffle as a strategic realignment, stating that Rubio would bring “strong leadership” to the national security post while continuing his duties at the State Department. Trump also announced plans to nominate Waltz as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, calling him a committed public servant who “put the nation’s interests first.”
