The Trump administration has deported Tou Lue Vang, a Laotian national, despite a pardon granted by Minnesota's Board of Pardons.

According to the report, the Department of Homeland Security carried out the removal on Friday after determining that a federal immigration removal order issued in 2006 remained legally enforceable.

The report said the pardon had been granted in an effort to prevent Vang's deportation following his conviction for repeatedly sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl.

Federal officials argued that the state pardon did not invalidate the existing immigration order.

According to the report, the Department of Homeland Security criticized the pardon, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the deportation ensures Vang "will never pose a threat to any American ever again."

The report added that Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison defended the pardon process, whereas House Majority Whip Tom Emmer and other Republican lawmakers condemned the decision to grant clemency.
