The Trump administration has finalized new regulations governing F and J visas, introducing fixed stay limits for foreign students, exchange visitors, and certain journalists.
According to the report, the new rules cap most F and J visa stays at four years and limit journalist visas to 240 days, with the changes set to take effect 60 days after publication in the Federal Register.
The report said the Department of Homeland Security justified the changes by citing a sharp rise in visa admissions and the need for stronger oversight.
According to the report, universities and education advocacy groups have criticized the new regulations, arguing they could reduce the United States' ability to attract international talent and create uncertainty for students in lengthy academic programs.
Concerns have also been raised about implementation, as immigration authorities continue to face a substantial backlog of pending cases.
