SpaceX is moving ahead with its planned $60 billion acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor, strengthening Elon Musk’s push to compete with leading artificial intelligence firms such as Anthropic and OpenAI.

According to a regulatory filing, Cursor will become a wholly owned subsidiary of SpaceX after the deal closes in the third quarter.

The report said SpaceX had previously secured rights to acquire Cursor or pursue a partnership valued at $10 billion. Cursor, developed by San Francisco-based startup Anysphere, has gained popularity as an AI-powered coding assistant and is widely used by software engineers.

According to the company, the acquisition will allow Cursor to work more closely with xAI and leverage the Colossus data center in Tennessee to develop future AI products. Cursor has been a key player in the rise of AI-assisted programming, often referred to as “vibe coding.

The announcement comes days after SpaceX’s successful stock market debut, with its shares continuing to climb in early trading.
