The House of Representatives on Thursday approved a fiscal 2027 appropriations bill covering agriculture, rural development, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and related agencies, marking another step in the annual government funding process.
The legislation passed by a narrow 213-210 vote. Five Republicans opposed the measure, while four Democrats supported it. According to House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole, the bill aims to support farmers and ranchers, strengthen food and drug safety efforts, and fund research and innovation.
The measure provides $7.1 billion for the FDA to oversee the safety of food, medicines and medical devices. It also allocates $1.16 billion to the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and includes provisions to improve tracking of foreign-owned land.
The vote marks the second fiscal 2027 spending bill passed by the House. Republican leaders must still advance 12 appropriations bills before the September deadline while balancing other major legislative priorities.
According to lawmakers, appropriators plan to continue moving forward despite expected partisan battles over future funding measures.
