Ukraine’s largest drone attack on Moscow since the start of the war has exposed growing vulnerabilities in Russia’s air defense network, according to experts cited by CNN.
Videos reviewed by CNN reportedly showed Russian forces responding in a hurried manner, including soldiers firing portable air-defense weapons from a busy highway and a defense missile apparently striking an oil storage facility instead of its intended target.
Analysts said the incidents highlighted weaknesses in Russia’s ability to counter large-scale drone attacks.
According to the report, Ukraine has spent years refining long-range drone operations while simultaneously targeting Russian radar systems and air-defense launchers. Kyiv has also forced Moscow to disperse its defenses across a wider area by striking multiple locations deep inside Russia.
Experts told CNN that many Russian systems were originally designed to counter aircraft and missiles rather than swarms of smaller drones.
The report said sanctions and production challenges may also be limiting Russia’s ability to modernize defenses, while repeated Ukrainian attacks continue to strain existing resources and missile stockpiles.
