The U.S. Embassy in Nassau has issued a warning advising American travelers to avoid renting Jet Skis in the Bahamas, citing concerns over safety standards, operator conduct, and reports of criminal incidents involving tourists.
According to embassy officials, multiple incidents have been reported involving local watercraft operators, including allegations of sexual assault and unsafe operating practices.
The warning specifically highlights locations around Nassau and nearby resort destinations, including areas frequented by cruise ship passengers and vacationers.
Officials said some victims reported being approached by operators offering rides before later experiencing criminal conduct or unsafe situations.
Among the changes is a prohibition on operators riding with customers, a measure intended to reduce opportunities for misconduct and improve accountability within the sector.
The advisory comes as the Bahamas remains under a U.S. Level 2 travel advisory, which encourages visitors to exercise increased caution.
While the country continues to be one of the Caribbean’s most popular tourist destinations, U.S. officials are urging travelers to remain vigilant, use licensed operators when engaging in recreational activities, and carefully follow local safety guidance throughout their stay.
