The UK government is preparing a new strategy to strengthen the country’s semiconductor industry by making direct purchases of artificial intelligence chips from British technology companies, according to reports.

The initiative is designed to help keep promising firms and advanced technology within the United Kingdom rather than seeing them acquired by foreign competitors.

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall is expected to outline plans for “strategic purchases” of AI-related semiconductor equipment alongside measures that include taxpayer-backed funding and workforce development programs.

The broader objective is to expand Britain’s presence in the global semiconductor market and build a domestic industry worth an estimated £37 billion.

The government has already committed £100 million through the Advanced Research and Invention Agency’s scaling compute program.

Half of that funding is earmarked for a new scaling inference laboratory where British startups can test and validate AI hardware technologies.

The effort comes amid growing concern over the loss of major British chip firms to overseas buyers.

💡
Recent acquisitions of Graphcore and Alphawave, along with Arm’s decision to pursue a primary listing in New York, have intensified fears that the UK could struggle to maintain an independent semiconductor sector without stronger government support.
