The wreck of the US Coast Guard Cutter Tampa, the deadliest US naval loss of World War I, has been discovered after more than a century. According to CNN, British divers located the vessel 300 feet below the Atlantic, about 50 miles off the Cornwall coast.

The report said the volunteer Gasperados Dive Team spent three years researching and searching for the wreck. The US Coast Guard confirmed the ship’s identity using archival images and historical records.

The Tampa sank on September 26, 1918, after being struck by a torpedo from a German submarine. The explosion killed all 131 people on board, including US personnel and British crew members.

According to the Coast Guard, the discovery brings closure to families and honors those lost. Officials said further exploration using robotics is planned to better study the wreck and preserve its historical significance.
