Disbarred South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh will face a second trial on murder charges beginning April 5, 2027, after a judge set a retrial date following the overturning of his previous convictions on appeal.
Murdaugh, 58, appeared in court on Monday in his first hearing since the appellate ruling. Circuit Court Judge Debra McCaslin said jury selection will begin on the scheduled date and indicated the case would proceed without delay.
Defense attorneys have requested a change of venue, additional independent DNA testing and access to a computer while Murdaugh remains in prison.
The judge did not immediately rule on those motions but stressed that the trial schedule would remain unchanged.
Separate from the murder case, Murdaugh continues to serve concurrent state and federal prison sentences after pleading guilty to numerous financial crimes, ensuring he remains incarcerated regardless of the retrial's outcome.
