A prolonged and potentially record-breaking heat wave is expected to grip much of the eastern United States ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, with more than 100 million people facing major to extreme heat risks, reported by CNN.
According to the National Weather Service, the greatest danger will come from persistently warm nights, offering little relief and increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses. More than 100 daytime temperature records and over 250 warm overnight records could be challenged this week.
Officials in cities including Washington, New York and Nashville are expanding heat preparedness efforts as millions are expected to attend parades, fireworks and other outdoor celebrations. Forecasters said above-average temperatures may linger across much of the South even after the holiday weekend.
