The Israeli military has acknowledged for the first time that its forces fired on a vehicle carrying 5-year-old Hind Rajab in Gaza and said it has launched a criminal investigation into her death, according to CNN.

The admission reverses an earlier Israeli military position. A previous investigation had concluded that Israeli forces were not near the vehicle and could not have fired on it.

Rajab was traveling with six relatives in northern Gaza in January 2024 when the vehicle came under gunfire. She survived the initial attack and remained on a phone call with Palestinian emergency workers while seeking help. An ambulance sent to rescue her was also attacked.

Her body was discovered 12 days later inside the heavily damaged vehicle.

Recordings of Rajab’s desperate calls to paramedics drew international attention and prompted demands for accountability. The case also became the subject of the film “The Voice of Hind Rajab,” which received an Oscar nomination in 2026.

CNN reported that the new criminal probe marks a significant shift in the military’s handling of the case.
