President Donald Trump has announced a temporary plan to allow up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef to be imported into the United States over 90 days, saying the move will help reduce high prices for American consumers.
Trump blamed declining domestic cattle supplies and said increased imports would give ranchers time to rebuild the U.S. beef herd.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins is also developing measures to strengthen domestic cattle production. Market analysts said livestock markets responded positively after details of the plan emerged.
The United States currently operates a tariff-rate quota system for beef imports, with countries including Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Uruguay receiving specific quotas, while other suppliers compete within a shared allocation.
