President Donald Trump said he did not consult Israel before announcing the U.S. decision to recognize Syria’s new government led by Islamist President Ahmed al-Sharaa. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One after departing Abu Dhabi, Trump said, “I didn't ask them about that. I thought it was the right thing to do… We want Syria to succeed.”

The move marks a significant policy shift, as Trump also said he would order the lifting of U.S. sanctions on Damascus ahead of his expected meeting with Sharaa. The announcement has raised eyebrows in Israel, a close U.S. ally, which remains deeply suspicious of Sharaa’s leadership. The president made the remarks as he wrapped up a four-day tour of Gulf nations.
