Twenty-six former Meta Platforms employees have filed a lawsuit alleging the company used artificial intelligence tools to unfairly target workers with disabilities or those on medical leave during recent layoffs.

According to the report, the lawsuit was filed in federal court in Oakland, California, by plaintiffs from six states, including California, New York, and the District of Columbia.

The report said the employees claim Meta relied on productivity metrics and AI-powered token usage when selecting workers for layoffs, placing employees who had taken medical leave at a disadvantage.

The lawsuit is linked to the company's broader workforce reduction plan, which called for cutting about 10 percent of its global workforce.

According to the report, Meta denied the allegations, stating that the claims lack merit.

A company spokesperson said organizational decisions were made by people rather than AI systems, rejecting the assertion that artificial intelligence was used to determine which employees would be laid off.
