British police have arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of murdering former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe, whose death was announced on Friday.

According to the report, officers found the 78-year-old with serious injuries at her home after responding to an emergency call around midday on Thursday.

The report said Devon and Cornwall Police are treating the case as a murder investigation but do not believe it is linked to terrorism or political motives.

Investigators said the suspect remains in custody while forensic examinations continue at the property.

According to the report, Widdecombe served as a Conservative member of Parliament from 1987 to 2010 and held several junior ministerial roles in former Prime Minister John Major's government.

Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood described the circumstances of her death as deeply distressing.
