The USS George Washington remains en route to the Middle East, where the U.S. Navy plans to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln amid continuing tensions with Iran, according to CBS News.
The Washington’s deployment comes as the Lincoln’s crew faces an unusually lengthy mission. According to CBS News, sailors have been deployed for nine months, well beyond the typical six-month deployment. Relatives have also raised concerns about mental health, sanitation and food supplies aboard the carrier.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported that the Washington would relieve the Lincoln as U.S. forces remain engaged in a standoff with Iran over the Strait of Hormuz.
Based on the Pentagon’s limited location information, the Washington was still south of the Arabian Sea on Tuesday. It is expected to enter the U.S. Central Command area in the coming days.
