Vladimir Putin arrived in China this week seeking stronger economic, energy and diplomatic backing from Chinese leader Xi Jinping as Russia faces mounting pressure from the Ukraine war and Western sanctions.
According to reports, Moscow is pushing Beijing to advance the massive Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline project, which would redirect Russian energy exports toward Asia after Europe sharply reduced dependence on Russian supplies following the invasion of Ukraine.

Trade between the two countries has surged since 2022, with China becoming a major buyer of Russian oil and gas.
Analysts told Newsweek that China now holds greater leverage over Moscow because Russia’s economy is weakening amid slowing growth forecasts and continued attacks on its infrastructure.
The visit also carries geopolitical significance following President Donald Trump’s recent trip to Beijing. Experts said Xi is signaling that China’s strategic ties with Russia remain strong despite improving communication with Washington.
