Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov’s call for presidential elections during the war has intensified political pressure on President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to CNN analysis.
Fedorov argued that Ukraine must protect its democratic principles despite Russia’s invasion. His challenge comes as Zelensky faces declining popularity, corruption concerns surrounding members of his administration and growing public frustration over the war and military mobilization.
However, holding an election during active fighting would present major logistical and security challenges. Millions of Ukrainians are abroad, while others live in Russian-occupied territory.
CNN reported that polling has identified former military chief Valery Zaluzhnyi and Fedorov as potential contenders. Both would likely maintain Ukraine’s broader direction while changing Zelensky’s political circle.
The debate comes as Ukraine faces a difficult winter, battlefield pressures and renewed U.S.-backed efforts to revive peace negotiations. Fedorov’s demand highlights a growing question: when can Ukraine restore normal democratic processes without weakening its wartime effort?
