A U.S. federal judge has declined to temporarily block planned layoffs at Meta Platforms, despite a lawsuit alleging the company used artificial intelligence to unfairly target employees on protected medical, parental, and disability leave.
According to the report, 26 current and former employees filed the lawsuit in federal court in Oakland, California, claiming AI-powered internal systems influenced workforce reduction decisions.
Meta has denied the allegations, maintaining that employment decisions were made by managers rather than artificial intelligence.
According to the report, U.S. District Judge William Orrick ruled that the employees did not meet the legal standard required to obtain an emergency injunction, allowing the scheduled layoffs to proceed.
The lawsuit, which cites the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, and California's AI bias regulations, could influence future legal standards for the use of AI in workplace decision-making.
